2012: read #1

I've never been the resolution making kind of gal.
Sure, I'll make goals....and then promptly ignore them when my motivation fades.
Needless to say, 1 January came and went without me putting pen to paper of must-do's for the year.

Even so, there's one thing I do want to do more of this year.
A need, not so much a goal.
I want to make sure I'm reading those books that are sitting on my shelf, purchased for such a thing, but alas, still sitting there.

(you must be thinking it's quite peculiar, for an English teacher, of all people, to say she doesn't read enough)

Yet I'm good at finding excuses.
There are other things to do, cross off my list, help the girls with, you name it.

But then there's that crazy thing that happens once I get sucked into a book.
I do get sucked into it.
Cannot put it down.
(would you be surprised to know I was that kid who kept the light on past when my Mom told me to, just so I could finish that book?)

Read #1 of 2012
Yes, just 26 days into the month
(you don't need to know that I actually purchased and started reading this book back in June....I won't mention that) Passion by Lauren Kate, the third in her Fallen series

Before you judge this reader by her cover, let me first explain, cause this is not the typical Heidi book.

My girls at school were practically begging me to read the first book, Fallen, last year. They knew that they wouldn't have my permission to read it for class until I knew what it was about. And they knew I wouldn't rely on someone else's summary, but that I'd have to read it for myself. Tired of their insistence, I borrowed one girl's copy....and read it from cover to cover within a few hours. Just for the record, the same exact thing that had happened with the Twilight series. Totally not my type of bok going into it (I'm not much for fantasy), but once I was in it, I was hooked.

That said...I can't not finish this series. I'm already committed (and, by the way, a little peeved that I have to wait until June to get my hands on the final book).

I'm not out to give you a summary here, but simply to tell you what I gained from it.
First, just as I wasn't bothered with the werewolves and vampires and half-human, half-vampire in Twilight, I'm not too put out by the angels in Fallen. Those werewolves and vampires made a good story, albeit quite fake. I got that - I never took it as real life anyways. A friend asked me if I was bothered by how the angels were portrayed in Passion. They definitely aren't your typical Bible-based winged creatures. My answer: no. The Bible is my source of Truth, not a made up tale by a good writer with a cute name. I know the story, the characters, the story line are fiction. I take it as that, as a good story, and I don't let it influence what I believe. My beliefs are stronger than that.

What else? Well, who doesn't love a good love story? I'm not your typical hopeless romantic, though. Half the time, I'll probably choose an action flick over a sappy love story. But I still love the love. Passion offers that - a good story of a girl and a guy who love each other, above all else.

And I can't ignore the fact that Ms. Kate herself is just a good writer. Even with the writer that I think I am (or really am not), I cannot read a book like this without being left with a sense of amazement that one person can imagine such a story on her own, in her head, and put ideas to paper. Stories that are page-turners, leave you wondering what's going to happen next, characters that are so masterfully created that you swear they're real, cause you feel like you know them so well. Made-up creatures or not, Kate is a superb storyteller.

So there you have it.
Read #1 of 2012.
#2 will appear here before long (just act like you don't know that I actually started it back in November).
